Interview – Micah Bentley of A Change Of Pace

I few years back I came across the video above by Micah Bentley. I figured he must have been signed artist, but I contacted him anyways. He wasn’t signed. A friendship was started and we began talking about a plan for his solo career. Micah was then asked by his high school friends in A Change of Pace to take over as their new lead singer. I recently chatted with Micah about joining ACOP, their new album, and a bunch of other stuff.

Make sure to pickup his two solo albums on iTunes The Impossible EP and The Height of the Fall EP.

A few years back you and I talked about joining A Change of Pace when you were offered the spot. Was it a pretty easy decision for you to make?

Yeah it was a pretty easy choice, they were all really good friends of mine and I loved the band and what they were all about.

In 2008 you officially took over as singer of ACOP, filling a spot of a very talented and well-liked singer. How has it been filling the shoes of the old singer as well as making your own mark in the band and on the fans?

It’s not easy coming into that role. People have certain expectations that in some cases are impossible to meet because I’m a completely different person. For the most part though I’d have to say the support from the fans and dealing with the member change has been incredible.

You were originally a solo artist. How has it been transitioning from a solo artist to a front man of an established band?

Well before I did my solo project in high school I was in several different bands so I knew what it was like. It’s just different when you’re working equally with 4 other dudes where with the solo project I handled everything myself. Things are both harder and easier. It’s been a complete joy though with ACOP because everyone contributes an important role and we have a very well functioning system. Becoming a part of this band has challenged me in so many ways to become a better singer, songwriter and all around performer.

You have a couple solo albums up on iTunes. Do you still write as a solo artist and can fans expect anything new to be released anytime soon?

Yes, I’m very proud of the solo stuff I’ve put out. I’m always writing songs whether it’s for ACOP or something else but I’m not really focused on anything but the band at the moment simply because it requires my full attention. You never know though, I might have some free time to put out something in the future!

The band released an EP independently with a softer pop sound shortly after you joined. How have the fans taken to the new sound?

That EP was not a fair representation of ACOP’s sound. It was kind of weak in some ways and didn’t have the energy our fans are used to. At the same time all of those songs were just demos we never intended to release but had to give our fans something. We’ve brought that energy back with the new record.

In January ACOP recorded their first full-length since 2006 in Virginia with Elvis Baskette. How was that experience for you?

It was life changing for me. I’ve wanted my entire life to record with multi platinum producers like Elvis Baskette and Dave Holdridge. I was in complete paradise and it was so rewarding to have them bring our years of hard work to life.

The band spent the previous two years writing a lot of songs. How many songs did the band write and how many did you go into the studio with to record?

Haha we wrote A LOT of songs. Because our guitarist Dan records for a living, we were able to constantly demo what we were writing. Some songs had 4 or 5 versions before we were even content with them. When it was all said and done we had writing well over 70 songs. We picked 12 or so track.

Was it hard to narrow down the songs to what you have now and how many tracks will be on the new album?

It wasn’t too hard. It was obvious at the end which songs were the strongest. There were a lot more that I wish we could have recorded but we only had so much time and wanted to be able to focus on the ones we were doing. There are 11 on the record.

Can we expect to hear more of the same pop-rock sound?

Yeah it’s still a pop rock sound for sure. We just wanted to make sure our songs still had the balls from previous records. We wanted to maintain a rock sound but still have the catchiness. I think that was achieved.

Is there a release date yet?

Not a confirmed date but we’re looking at January

Will the album be self-released again or with label backing?

Haha TBA

What are the plans for ACOP following the release?

Tour tour tour!!

ACOP has a very large and supportive fan base. How have you kept such supportive fans while being off the road and not releasing new material for so long in the current music market?

I don’t think it’s a mistake that so many people still love the band and are awaiting this new record. The band’s always been all about our fans. They’ve treated us very well and we only hope they understand we’ve been taking our time on this record to give them the absolute best. Were very lucky to have so much support still.

What’s the one question no one has ever asked you, but you wish they would?

will you please take this suitcase full of a million dollars off my hands?!?! haha

Would you like to add anything else or say to your fans?

Just that I am a very blessed individual to be able to make music and travel around the world and I can’t wait to do it more with the release of this new record!! Come say hi and stay updated on my facebook page or http://www.micahbentley.tumblr.com/. thanks

Thanks for your time Micah! Everyone make sure to pick up the new ACOP record when it comes out early next year.

Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover – Read The Full Story

Before you click away in disgust over the picture, stop! Get over it and read the story below before you judge.

In September of 2007, myself and three friends took a trip to New York and Boston for a week of baseball. We visited Yankee and Shea Stadiums in New York and Fenway Park in Boston. Some love for Fenway is at the bottom of this post.

The picture above was taken on Paul’s (the other guy in the picture) birthday. Not many people have seen the picture before and there is obviously good reason for it. Just looking at the picture by itself you may say, what the heck? That’s because you don’t know the story that goes with it.

The four of us were at a restaurant in Times Square after an afternoon game at Yankee Stadium. We were celebrating Paul’s 25th birthday. I don’t remember if it was the ESPN Zone, but if it wasn’t it was something very similar. Food, bar, games, etc.

When I had returned from the bathroom I was told there was a girl who wanted to take a picture with me. “Haha ok. Very funny guys. Where is she? Let’s take this picture.” I told them.

I knew my friends talked to some girl and begged or paid her to pretend she thought I was cute and that she wanted to take a picture with me. So I knew I had to play along. I was going to play along with their joke.

They waved the girl over to our table where she made a little bit of small talk on how she thought I was cute and wanted to take a picture with me. Blah, blah. I laughed, thanked her, played along, and took the picture.

Paul wanted to get in it too so I let him. I figured he must have wanted to be in on the joke so he could laugh about how he tricked me, even though I wasn’t tricked. So we took a couple pictures, she made some more small talk, I thanked her and said I needed to finish my nachos. She walked off and I went back to my food as my three friends huddled around the camera laughing uncontrollably.

I said, “guys, it’s really not that funny. I know you probably bought her a beer to get her to come take a picture with me. You could have at least found a smoking hot blonde that I might have been slightly nervous around, but I wasn’t even attracted to that girl.”

The uncontrollable laughter didn’t stop. “Are you going to show me the picture or what?” I asked.

Finally they let me see the picture. They wouldn’t hand me the camera because they were scared I would delete the photo. As I looked at it for a minute in my friends hand that was shaking from laughter, I tried to figure out how I didn’t see the shirt that she was wearing while I was talking to her. Did I really rush the picture that much that I didn’t even look at her? No. It’s because she had her sweatshirt zipped up and had unzipped it right after she stood next to me to take the picture.

“Wow that is awesome! I can’t believe you guys pulled that one off!” I said.

There response was, “What?!?! You aren’t mad?”

But why would I be mad when I knew I was getting setup? I played along only to have gotten setup times two! It explains my goofy, thumbs up, lets be cheesy pose in the picture. I wanted to look like a big dork so my friends would get more satisfaction in their prank that I wasn’t falling for. It just makes it better that she was wearing the shirt that she was, because it made it twice as funny for them and now also funny for myself as well.

Good job guys! Prank well done!

Now the point of this story isn’t that girls who live in New York are kinda trashy and wear shirts like this. It’s not that I got pranked. The point is, a lot of times you may see a person or person in a picture and judge it without knowing the full story. I know I have and I am sure you have too. If you just saw the picture and didn’t read this story, you probably would have said what kind of guy is this Chris Loach character anyways?!?

So I hope that you read the full story and now understand that I don’t love what the picture above says I do. And I also hope you don’t judge others by the first appearance either.

Ok, now laugh and make fun of me for getting setup. Enjoy!

Here is the A’s bullpen in Fenway. Haren was pitching his last bullpen session of the season and Braden was kicking a baseball around the outfield like a hacky sack. Good times in NY and Boston.

Tony Hsieh – “Delivering Happiness” Review

Yesterday I finished reading Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh’s new book Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose. I really enjoyed the book, but I am also kinda a nerd with business books on how companies were started, built, failed, etc. Two other favorites are Marriott’s The Spirit to Serve: Marriott’s Way and Southwest’s Nuts! Southwest Airlines’ Crazy Recipe for Business and Personal Success.

Tony starts his book from his family upbringing and onto his college years. Then building and selling his first business, LinkExchange for over $200 million dollars before starting Zappos.

The thing I like most about Delivering Happiness is Tony’s open and honest writing. He talks about when he was on course in his business but also when he was straying off course and away from what the business stood for. He also wasn’t afraid to put his time money and energy into something he believed in, even when others told him he shouldn’t. Any billion dollar business CEO who quotes Winnie-the-Pooh in their book gets a thumbs up from me.

Tony’s three rules for his speeches are:
1) Be passionate.
2) Tell personal stories.
3) Be real.
All three of which are shown in his writing as well.

Tony goes on to talk about happiness and what he thought would bring him happiness compared to what did bring him happiness. He states, “Most people go through their lives thinking, When I get ___, I will be happy, or When I achieve ___, I will be happy.” I think most people think that way, myself included. But Tony points out that research shows, the happiness you thought you would achieve ends up fading fairly quickly after achieving it.

To sum it all up, Zappos sounds like an amazing company to work for! Not just because their customer service is amazing, or because after they hire you, you are offered $2,000 to quit, or even because they were sold to Amazon for over a billion dollars. But you’ll have to get the book and see for yourself all the amazing reasons why Zappos would be a company I’d love to work for and you probably would too.

All You Can Fly

Right now I am kinda ticked I have a job. Don’t get me wrong, I am very thankful for it, but JetBlue is once again doing their “All You Can Jet” deal. Last year I found out about it after it happened and this year I am not in a place where I can do it. (full-time job) Major bummer!

The deal is, for either $499 or $699 you get a seat to any of the 60 cities JetBlue flies to for an entire month! That is a dream for me. I’d fly to a different city everyday. It would cost me thousands of dollars for what I could get for 500 bucks.

If you don’t know, I love to travel! My dream job would be to live out of a suitcase and be in a different city every week or day. I love flying. I love airports. I love people watching. I love free peanuts. I love everything about it. Kinda funny how most people hate it. My parents always told me I was special. Oh well, maybe next year.

Note to Southwest. If you did this I’d pay a grand for a month of unlimited travel. Hint, hint. Do it!

If you could fly anywhere, where would you fly?
