Halloween?

For everyone that’s always wondered how a pumpkin pie is made…the picture above is pretty much how it’s done.

I love pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving or Christmas, but it’s pretty much safe to say that I hate Halloween! Halloween is now the second largest “holiday” in America. Really? That has to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Now you may try and say that I don’t like Halloween because my dad tried to make me believe it was worse than the devil himself when I was growing up(because being a kid and getting free candy is evil). But no, that is NOT why I hate Halloween.

If Halloween was the same as it was ten years ago, I could care less and I wouldn’t be typing this blog. It was fun for children. CHILDREN! Once you got into middle or high school, you stopped dressing up and celebrating it…or maybe you just went to some party instead. But you didn’t keep dressing up throughout high school and into adulthood.

Halloween is now a six billion dollar a year industry in America. And that has only happened in the last ten years. SIX BILLION DOLLARS! That means every person in America spends $20 on Halloween. It also means that 12 million children in Africa could have food, clothing, health care, and schooling provided for them for an entire year. TWELVE MILLION CHILDREN! And we wonder why America is going down the drain? Is in so much debt? Can’t function even halfway efficiently? Has their heads so far up their butts? Everyone is out dressed like a hooker!

I went to Safeway last night and I felt like I was in a whorehouse. Or at least what I would picture a whorehouse looking like. Every female wearing next to nothing and was ok with it. It’s wasn’t even Halloween yet! But now Halloween has become the one day that girls can dress like sluts and either get away with it or think it’s really cute. And that is the reason guys will dress up too…so they can go to a club, bar, or party and look at the dressed up sluts. Really?

Sure I will still carve pumpkins and take my kids trick or treating, but I think Halloween as an industry and as a holiday is beyond stupid. But that’s just my two cents. Have fun staring at all the sluts today children.

Obama Loves Jesus?

I saw this video a couple of weeks ago and thought it was fitting for Sunday since it’s the day most Americans go to church…if they go to church. President Obama is asked and answers the question of why he is a Christian. I think he does a decent job for not having his telepromter in front of him. Why do so many silly American Christians feel the need to judge and claim that Obama isn’t a Christian? Shouldn’t we leave that between him and God? Just my two cents.

I Bet You’ve Been Around The Block

Earlier this week I had an author come in and ship out a copy of her book to someone. The book was called The Virgin Diaries. During the process the author said to me, “This book is written based on a bunch of interviews from people about losing their virginity. I am obviously going to assume you are not a virgin but, would you have been interested in reading a book on losing your virginity when you still were a virgin?”

I tried really hard not to laugh at her comment and responded, “Oh yeah, sure I’d probably be interested in something like that back then.” Of course I said it like I was a big tough guy like oh yeah way back in the day when I was still a silly little virgin. I mean my other option was to spill the beans and tell her I was still a virgin but I sure as heck didn’t want to do that because she would probably would have asked me a bunch of questions about it. So she said thanks, paid, and left.

I was telling a friend about the exchange later that day and he was semi surprised at the authors comments. I mean, I wasn’t at all offended by it…but it really does take a lot to offend me. I said to him how it’s funny that people assume everyone isn’t a virgin. But if you know anything about statistics…it’s probably a safe thing to say to anyone over 18 years old. Most guys even if they are a virgin still want people to think that they aren’t a virgin.

But my buddy said had she said the same thing she said to me to a girl, it might have been a slightly different story. There reaction might be, you are assuming that I’ve slept with people before? How rude! Different sexes and different people would react to the assumption very differently. That brings up the question. Is it a good idea to assume that everyone is a virgin or isn’t a virgin?

Here’s the books description from Amazon. The Virgin Diaries
WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO LOSE YOUR VIRGINITY? Seventy-two men and women answer that burning question. Hundreds of years of collective experience answer the questions every virgin has. THE VIRGIN DIARIES is a book about sex that really isn’t about sex at all. Rather, it’s about the feelings associated with that first time: wondering about it, worrying about it, the expectations, the surprises and the disappointments. Within these pages are the recollections of seventy-two people, young and old, gay and straight, who responded to the call for answers. This candid collection of stories provides a unique opportunity to be a fly on the wall. There is no commentary. The stories stand on their own, allowing the reader to form his or her own conclusions. Whether you are a virgin and desire to make an informed decision, a parent faced with “the talk” or are interested in reading detailed accounts of one of life’s most personal experiences, THE VIRGIN DIARIES offers confidential insights and illustrates the commonalities we all share: our hopes, dreams, fears and insecurities. It shows that we are all human and therefore, all connected.

Maybe some of the disappointments, fears, and insecurities wouldn’t be there if you waited for the right person to lose it with? Just my two cents.

Public Picture Fail

I stopped by the mall after work on Wednesday to stare at the new Apple Computers which the Apple Store didn’t even have in stock yet. On my way out of the parking garage, I noticed this U-Haul truck that was wedged against the concrete roof. The picture is blurry because I was stuck at the stop light while leaving the garage and was being yelled at by the dude in the bottom right corner who is letting air out of the tires…like that’s going to help get you out! Oh, I was also yelled at by his two other buddies who I am guessing all took part in getting the U-Haul stuck like chuck.

They yelled, “Hey stop taking pictures!” “You can’t do that!”

I just pretended like I didn’t hear them while I sat at the light until it turned green. I drove off laughing…but also thinking. Everyone pretty much has a camera on their cell phone these days and is able to snap photos of all kinds of things that would have been harder to capture say five years ago. Should you be allowed to and is it a good or bad thing? Is it OK to take a picture of an accident scene? Someone wearing something really funny? A funny license plate or bumper sticker? Or…someone who did something really, really stupid…like get a U-Haul stuck in a parking garage?

I kinda feel like if I did something really stupid or had a huge wedgie that I would deserve to have pictures taken.

Today I Quit Being A Christian

Anne Rice is one of the most popular authors of our time, having sold almost 100 million copies of her books. I knew nothing about her and have never read any of her books. That is, until last week when she “quit” being a Christian via a Facebook message. Isn’t there a better way to quit on God’s people than through social media? But, I guess that’s the way we do things these days. I can’t wait to dump someone via changing my Facebook relationship status and no longer having them included as “in a relationship” with me so the next time they log in they will know that they have been dumped! I wonder if God had to log in to see that His people had been dumped or if He already knew?

Anyways, Anne quitting Christianity has caused a huge wave of reactions from both Christians and non-Christians. Pretty much everyone and their mother has blogged or written about it this past week. I have nothing else to talk about today, so how about I talk about Anne too? Here we go!

Her first post is below.

“For those who care, and I understand if you don’t: Today I quit being a Christian. I’m out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being “Christian” or to being part of Christianity. It’s simply impossible for me to “belong” to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I’ve tried. I’ve failed. I’m an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.”

A bit later she made a followup post.

“As I said below, I quit being a Christian. I’m out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian Amen”

What I find original about this is, Anne “quit” on Christ’s followers in “the name of Christ.” That sounds pretty funny to me and I don’t really know how that works, but whatever.

What I don’t find original about this is, the jumping on the bandwagon of over-dramatizing the hypocrisy of Christianity.

I hear it or see it everyday. Someone complaining about Christians being hypocrites because of X, Y, or Z, while being a hypocrite themselves in doing so.

I’d also like to find out where Anne was told that being a Christian meant being anti everything she listed above, because no where in the Bible does it say any of that. In the name of Christ you should refuse to be anti a lot of the things she listed, and as a Christian myself, I am with her and the Bible on that.

What it comes down to is this. I think every Christian has wanted to give up on the church, aka the body of Christ, at one time or another. I have plenty of times, and probably more times than you can count! But if you give up on the body, you give up on the person as well.

Guess what? When you marry a woman, you get her crazy mother too. When you get a dog, you get the shit it leaves in your yard as well. Having a daughter, gives you lots of gray hair way too early in life. Eating Taco Bell, gives you diarrhea. Becoming a Christian, gets you millions of other imperfect Christians (just like yourself) standing under Christ as your new family. Like anything, it’s a two for one deal.

Being a follower of Christ means, being part His body. Being part of His body means living, loving, learning, following, and doing His Word as He designed you to do side by side and hand in hand with his fellow followers.

End rant.

iPhone Bill

Above is my monthly data usage on my iPhone. You will notice Nov, May, and Jun are about 100mb lower than the other months when I didn’t use my home wi-fi. AT&T no longer offers the “unlimited” plan for new iPhone customers but tells their previous customers they can keep it. The catch is, if they ever downgrade to a smaller plan they can never go back to the unlimited plan. So most people end up keeping the unlimited thinking that they need it or will need it. The next plan down from the unlimited is 2gb a month and is $5 cheaper a month. I am sure most people don’t downgrade because it’s only $5 and they don’t want to lose the unlimited option. But after checking I see that I’ve never gone over 1/2gb let alone 2gb. So I downgraded and will now save $120 over the life of my contract. High 5′s for me! Most people should probably downgrade as well. Just my two cents.

Conversation With My Cousin

My 10 year old cousin, Jackson is visiting for the summer from Washington. Here is our conversation from around 10:30pm a few nights ago.

Jack: Chris your talking is causing me to not be able to sleep.

Chris: Sorry sir, I was letting Sam(my dog) out. (I had said, “Sam wanna go out?”)

Jack: But I can not sleep when you are talking.

Chris: I understand but I was done talking until you started talking to me.

Jack: But when you talk I can’t sleep.

Chris: The longer you’d like to continue repeating yourself the longer you will keep yourself up Jack.

Jack: But your talking is keeping me up and not letting me sleep.

Chris: Laughs. Walks away.

Just like it’s sometimes best to laugh and walk away when talking to a female, a lot of times it’s also best to laugh and walk away when talking to a ten year old. Just my two cents.

World Cup Soccer

Is anyone else as glad as I am that the World Cup is over? America is a country that has not ever cared about watching soccer, but now all of a sudden everyone seems to watch it. I have one friend who is the exception to this post because he’s from England and has always followed soccer, but everyone else…not so much. My twitter and facebook feeds have been filled with play by play updates of how the players are always crying or faking some kind of injury. I think whoever invented soccer was probably a lawyer because soccer players seem to s t r e t c h the truth a lot. Anyways I think the picture above sums everything up. Just my two cents.

San Francisco bans coke from city vending machines At first I thought this was a joke but I guess if the city is paying for its workers health insurance they should be able to help fight obesity which increases their health care costs right? But if you are obese and like it you are going to bring your can of regular Coke to work anyway right? If they really want to fight obesity make their workers pay a premium on their health care for being overweight. That might get people into shape.

WE ARE WAITING FOR YOU TO FAIL “I know so many people these days that seem unwilling to step out and try something new for fear of making a mistake.” <– That would be me…I fail!

“The person who doesn’t make mistakes, is unlikely to make anything.” – Paul Arden

Women drive most faith participation Really men? How can you be the spiritual head of your household when you are too busy having your head up your butt? Just wondering…

We Have More Control Than We Think “You and I have 100% control of the one thing that is the most important to our success: ourselves.” I am practicing control over myself by putting myself to bed shortly after 1am. Tonight I win…tomorrow, maybe not.

The Problem with Honesty “But sometimes I wonder what society would look like if all of us were brutally honest all the time. We might have clear consciences and satisfied intellects. But would we have any friends? Would we live in chaos?”

Why is it so hard for us to live our lives and be honest in the process? Are we trying to impress people by making ourselves look better than we really are? Check. Do we not want to hurt people? Check. But for the most part I think when we are not honest, it’s generally to benefit ourselves and not others. Check. Can you be not be honest and still benefit others?

Just my two cents.
